The Link between Food, the Environment & Chronic Pain CA-A-19-01-11040
This class demonstrates the links between the environment, food supply, chronic inflammation, chronic pain, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, depression, autoimmunity and fatigue.
This course discusses the links between food, human health and chronic pain. What is the relationship between food, the environment, pesticides, preservatives and food storage? Research examining the connection between nutrition and pain focuses on fatty acids (PUFAs)—which are plentiful in the American diet. Some PUFAs promote or lessen inflammation. For example, Omega-3, found in fish and nuts, are anti-inflammatory, whereas omega-6, found in processed and fried foods, can increase inflammation and worsen chronic pain. Do man-made products, such as the chemicals found in plastics (phthalates), impact human health? In a recent study—which is the first to explore total phthalate exposure among Australian males—data was taken from 1,500 men. Phthalates were detected in 99.6 percent of the men aged 35 and older. Western diets are associated with higher concentrations of phthalates. Earlier studies have also shown that phthalate levels are higher in men who consume more packaged and processed foods, more carbonated soft drinks, and fewer fresh fruits and vegetables. Levels of the chemicals in each individual were then matched up with chronic diseases.
Secondly, animals at the top of the food chain accumulate the toxins animals they consume. The term is bio magnification. Research demonstrates that chemicals we once thought would decay in the environment are now building up in human tissues. These are some of the questions this class will attempt to answer:
- Do alterations in foods, use of pesticides, and plastics affect human health?
- What about food storage?
- All foods, supplements, and liquids are shipped and stored in plastics. Some examples include yogurt, liquor, meats and cheeses. Are these plastics non-interacting items in the environment with no impact upon human health? Or do plastics interact with intraceller biochemical pathways that accelerate, inhibit, or have effects on inflammation which drives the immune system?
Finally, we will sum up all these questions and bring them back to human health, chronic inflammation and chronic pain.
Balance Improvement Technique
This portion of our class fulfills the State Board’s Mandatory requirement of 4 hours of continuing education performing technique. Balance Improvement Technique is a technique that focuses on enabling people to recover, maintain or prevent the loss of mobility brought on by age, injuries, disease or degenerative conditions. It is used to help manage recovery from soft tissue injuries and disorders, increasing your patients functional range of motion, muscular strength, improving posture, body mechanics and restoring balance. The restoration of balance, and its importance in all activities of daily living, cannot be over stated especially in our older populations.
In this class we will explore the concepts of neurology, neuroplasticity, cerebellar and balance testing, brain stimulation, brain rehabilitation, massage, trigger point therapy, manual muscle testing, rehabilitation, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, transcutaneous nerve stimulation, moist heat and joint mobilization techniques. We will briefly discuss diets influence on global chronic inflammation, stimulation of the immune system, activation of auto-immune disorders including myasthenia gravis. The role of chronic inflammation impact upon joints, muscles, depression, neurotransmitter secretion, the neuromusclar junction, its impediment to the patient’s general health and physical rehabilitation will also be discussed.
While this portion of the class is structured, each class will be vary slightly in different directions of conversation depending on class participant’s interest.
The goals of the class are to improve the skills in:
• Musculoskeletal Patient Management
• Management of Proprioception Dysfunction
• Enhancing balance and coordination
• Improving motor skills
• Reducing pain and swelling
• Increasing range of motion
• Increasing flexibility
• Recovering mobility
• Building strength
• Speeding post-operative recovery
Lastly, developing a treatment plan for the patient that utilizes exercise, rehabilitation and diet modification to reducing inflammation, are necessary for long-term success of the patient’s care.
Ethics and Law
This course educates practitioners in the legal requirement as put forth by the State Board of California Chiropractic Examiners. We will discuss policies and procedures as set forth by the Board including the legal and moral obligations of the doctor, new continuing education requirements, scope of practice, what a duly licensed chiropractor may treat, informed consent, unprofessional conduct, filing of addresses, discipline by another state, display of license, change of name, use of title by unlicensed persons, illegal practice, ownership of practice upon the death or Incapacity of a licensee, ownership of a chiropractic practice and responsibility for conduct on premises.
Conflict & Stress
This course educates practitioners in the damaging effects of stress on all major systems of the body. We have both positive and negative stressors. There are three major types of stressors, Physical, Mental, and Chemical. Each type of stress affects other types of stressors within the body. Students will be shown a few examples such as; if an individual has a neck injury, which represents the physical portion of stress, the area becomes inflamed which creates pain chemicals. This can lead to a lack of sleep which negatively affects a person’s mental health.
We will discuss how body language in correlation with movement can show a person in distress. Happy people vs depressed persons show differences in body movement. Doctors will watch videos and through personal examples study movements and its correlation with happy vs depressed states. Doctors will learn how our mental thoughts have impacts upon brain chemistry and movement.
We will also discuss how and where do individuals experience stress. A hostile work environment, chronic pain, or the loss of a loved one has huge impacts upon our minds and bodies. Doctors will examine how visual images of stress through news programs, reality T.V. and our inability, or unwillingness, to disconnect from our modern devices have massive, negative, long term chronic stressful impacts on our nervous systems and body’s health.
Doctors will study how the new understanding of mirror neurons and the unconscious body language, which we give off, impacts their nervous systems. Dis-stressed people influence the chemical responses of people next to them. This includes people who have no knowledge of the stressful event that just transpired. Studies show that just the act of watching others have conflict increases out blood pressure, cortisol, and causes the viewer to go into a flight or fight response. Doctors will learn that they mirror the emotional state of people around them.
Human Perception of Chiropractic Techniques
As Human-beings, we believe in a lot of strange & unusual things. You can easily observe this in group discussions.
Is there anything you believe that can be perceived as unconventional?
To ourselves, we are not always consciously aware that what we believe in is indeed bizarre. In fact, what we believe in our own mind’s perception is actually quite real.
The history of Health Care, Medicine, Chiropractic, Pharmacology and Religion are riddled with outdated concepts that human-beings once believed to be real that are no longer seen as accurate.
We will discuss how human-beings, that is you and I, are deceived, willingly by leadership and ourselves. Primarily we will discuss how emotions and the limbic system disengage our frontal lobes analytical abilities and how group think encourages emotional thinking vs analytical thinking. Group think is a part of our evolutionary development. If group think deceives us, and group think is a part of evolution, then evolution itself participates in our deception.
We will also discuss the American Conversation Style which ‘moves the reference point’, changes subjects, uses anger to influence anothers decisions, performs character assassination on others so that we can believe in our false belief systems so we can ‘win’. This need to ‘win’ deceives us and is used by leadership to their benefit and the group’s detriment. Then this will be applied to human behavior, healing modalities, political systems and techniques.
This class will be encompassing historical, political and cultural events, which demonstrate how leaders teach and influence the groups understanding of reality. i.e. how did the leaders of the past influence current thinking about chiropractic. From there the class will spring board into, mirror neurons, blind spots and group dynamics.
In this class will we will be discussing:
• The Accuracy of Human Thought
• Current & Past Political and Historical events
• Frontal Lobe Logic
• Limbic Systems Emotional Attachments
• The inconsistency of human thinking
• Group Dynamics
• Group Structures
• The American Psyche
• Cults- News Cults, Political Cults, Computer Cults, Self-Help Cults, & (my favorite) Chiropractic Cults
• Climate Change
• Human Deception
Each topic will be discussed by using past and present examples to demonstrate real world examples of each concept. The class presentation will examine chiropractic belief systems and the mutation of thought over time. Once upon a time, chiropractic was believed to be a technique based on pressure on nerves to one based on proprioceptive inputs.
Finally, a portion of the class is dedicated to perceiving ‘Group Think’. Group think is where the group has come to a consensus about a particular idea and no new ideas are allowed to enter into the group’s collective conscious.

A severe car accident resulted in my pelvis being fractured in nine places, leaving me with very weak and imbalanced hips and herniated disks in my low back and neck. I experienced extreme muscle spasms and constant tension from the misalignment.
I received treatment from five other chiropractors who could not help me. Then I met Dr. Mark and was amazed at how thoroughly he evaluated my condition. His techniques and approach finally gave me relief. He also taught me exercises and provided nutritional advice including which supplements could improve my condition without the use of heavy medications.
Thank you Dr. Mark for all you have done for me and taught me. You're the best chiropractor I've ever met. I wish you the best. You're a master at your craft.
Dr. Mark is an amazing communicator. He relays the information to you in a professional way and in a way that helps you clearly understand the complex material. His presentation is very organized. The whole experience is easy to follow. After taking this course I've been able to fine tune my skills and investigate patient concerns much more effectively. He has helped me to be a better doctor. Thank you Dr. Mark.
I came to Dr. Mark Algee after suffering two years of chronic tension migraines. I had severe neck pain and pounding headaches, taking Maxalt for migraines, attended physical therapy, almost did a neck nerve block injection, and went to massage. I’ve spent so much money and time trying to get relief before I met Dr. Algee. He adjusted my neck and the relief was immediate. He talked me through the process with reassuring and comforting words, explaining the issues he found in my neck with expert knowledge. His bedside manner was so comforting. Immediately after adjusting my neck, knowing that it was a major procedure for me, he talked with me and made sure I was comfortable and at ease. I had minimal soreness and immediate relief. I used to crack my neck every 15 minutes but after the adjustment, I didn’t feel the need to crack it anymore. I have noticed a major decrease in the frequency of my migraines and neck stiffness. I plan to continue therapy with Dr. Algee as I am finally able to wake up without neck pain. I highly recommend a consultation with him if you are suffering chronic pain.
Dr. Mark Algee fixed an injury that had been causing me pain for over one and a half years. I had chronic spasms in the left side of my neck that caused muscular pain, and cervicogenic headaches. My C1 and C2 vertebrae were unable to articulate, perpetuating the muscle spasms. After five treatments he relieved me about 90-95% of the pain and chronic issues. I still have minor neck pain, but it's much more manageable and self therapy that relieves much of my pain. Dr. Mark Algee's adjustments continue to prove beneficial even with my extreme dysfunction of muscle spasms.
I highly recommend Dr. Algee because he has a wealth of knowledge and he knows how to balance the body which results in relief, comfort and relaxation.
I first visited Ventura Chiropractic when I couldn’t bend down because of the excruciating pain. I wasn’t sleeping well and was very nervous.
Dr. Algee was very thorough and made me feel relaxed. He patiently listened and adapted his treatment to my situation. When the treatment was complete he had me walk to assess how I felt. Then he told me to bend down. I doubted that I could bend down. To my surprise, I was able bend down. Very impressive. Since then I continue to see Dr. Algee whenever I have pain or discomfort. He is an outstanding chiropractor.
Dr. Mark Algee had me in "awe."
I suffered chronic earaches and severe dizziness for over a year and have been through four antibiotic treatments including antibiotic drops. After Dr Mark cracked my earlobes and adjusted my jaw, the dizziness and pain have decreased to almost nonexistent and I've been sleeping well.
This old body is looking forward to regular back and hip adjustments.
I’ve been a massage therapist for many years in the Ventura area and have worked with many chiropractors when doing massage therapy. Dr. Mark Algee is the most in-tune and thorough of any other chiropractor. He uses muscle testing and takes his time with patients. I appreciate that he has a genuine desire to help heal. I highly recommend Dr. Mark Algee to everyone. He is very good at his profession.
If you're unimpressed by Chiropractors this experience will be a different and better.
Dr. Mark Algee is not the typical. He won't just tell you to hop on the table and enjoy the same moves I just did on the last guy!
I've had some REALLY bad experiences with MDs and few positive ones. While I have not had any bad experiences with DCs, I had not had any good ones either. That was until I met Dr. Algee. If you have previously tried Chiropractic care and been unimpressed as I was, give him a try.
Dr Algee produced positive results in two days. My experience with other Chiropractors took several visits. He 's kind, caring and knowledgeable and his manipulation of the body produces quick results. He’s my #1 Chiro but don’t take my word for it. See for yourself.
